Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

When creating my magazine I must be aware of the risks involved in doing this. For example, When taking my photos both indoors and outdoors I must be careful not to damage any camera equipment. I could ensure this does not occur by keeping the camera I am using in my hands at all times and make sure I am careful when using it.
Another risk I must be aware of is any harm that could come to my modle whilst I am photographing them. This could include ensuring the floor is always tidy so there is no possibility of them tripping over and harming themselves.

Statement of Intent- magazine
The concept for my magazine is a fashion magazine for men catered towards the ABC1 demographic, this will mean the fashion included in the magazine will be smart wear that will appeal to my demographic. Furthermore, the unique selling point of my magazine will be that it appeals to a younger and more metrosexual audience.
This concept will fit the genre as my target audience is males from 16-25 year olds who are part of a more metrosexual generation that are not attached to traditional forms of masculinity. Furthermore I will be appealing to my ABC1 demographic by using smart fashion including items such as shirts and smart jumpers.
This type of magazine will fit the core values of the magazine company Bauer as this type of male magazine is different to the conventional magazines such as, GQ. This fits Bauer’s core values as their website states "We will always be driven by our customers and their changing needs" as their younger male audience requires a new and innovative type of magazine that I am supplying.
I will be using mise-en-scene in my magazine. For example, I will use lighting that accentuates shadows around my models face, this is done to bring out his facial features and make them stand out and seem masculine. I have attempted to use lighting to make my models look more, masculine as my magazine is for men therefore the readers will want the models used to look similar to them. The costumes used on my models support the direction of my magazine towards young modern men. This can be seen on my models through the use of jewellery such as necklaces and a watch. This use of jewellery is not traditionally masculine but is more of a modern feature of men's fashion. Hence my use of costume fits in with my magazines readership.  Furthermore I used mise on scene through my use of props. For Example on my first front cover my model is holding a flower, this is done to undermine typical stereotypes of masculinity, whilst still using a male model.
The message of my magazine is to try and reflect a modern and inclusive outlook on men's magazines. This is done by dressing my models in costumes that are not traditionally masculine as they are wearing jewellery and holding props that are not usually associated with masculinity. Also, my magazine enforces the message of having a multicultural society in which all people are included. I have shown this by using models from two different ethnic backgrounds in my magazine which shows this is an ethnically inclusive magazine.
My magazine will show a diverse range of representations through the models I will use for my magazines main photos.I will do this by using models that represent different ethnic backgrounds for example, a mixed raced model will be used as well as a indian model. I am doing this to show that my magzine is suited towards a diverse audience that feature a range of ethnic backgrounds.

Statement of intent- website

My website will include the typical conventions of websites by including things such as, a logo, masthead, original images and a menu bar. Furthermore media language of websites will be presented through the use of short and concise taglines and literary techniques.
I have designed my website to have a clean and mass appealing look. This will appeal to my audience of men as it appears to be well organised and easy to navigate through due to its basic design.
Write about what pages will be included on your website and how it is gStatement of Intent- magazine The concept for my magazine is a fashion magazine for men catered towardsthe ABC1 demographic, this will mean the fashion included in the magazine willbe smart wear that will appeal to my demographic. Furthermore, the uniqueselling point of my magazine will be that it appeals to a younger and moremetrosexual audience.
Throughout my coursework, I must make evident connections between my product by adding a sense of synergy between the magazine and website. For example, the same model has been used for one of my magazine front covers and contents page as well as my website. I am also going to use a simililar fashion style in my audio visual content on a website to retain consistency throughout my products. By doing this I will retain a similar mise-en-scene with the website photography and shots within the magazine itself, this establishes a clear link between the two products and therefore creates a synergetic link throughout my coursework products.

Original website Mock Up feedback

Oringinal Magazine Website Mock Up; Feedback
"The website follows traditional magazine website conventions... but lacks personality and your personal touch"-this shows that my first draft for my website has the potential to be a good website but lacks an individual edge to appeal to my specific audience.

"This websitemock up lacks direction and is not specific enough. However it does have a good layout and consoidered spacial awareness." This feedback tells me I need to make final decisions on my magazine name and what sort of images I should include.

Initial Brainstorm
Masthead:
I think a bold and and simplistic masthead would work well with my magazine to represent the magazines neat and dapper theme and reflects the smart fashion that is being shown in the magazine. Although I am unsure if I would prefer a more elegant font used for my masthead as it will look more sophisticated which may appeal my target audiences higher income bracket. However, my magazine is primarily for men so a elegant font may not appeal or grab their attention.

Colour scheme
My main colour scheme used in my magazine wil be a variation of purples and dark colours, I will frequently use the colour purple as it connotes royalty and luxery therefore it will appeal to my ABC1 audience. I also think I will use other colours that contrast my main colour scheme so there is a  contrasting dramatic effect making it stand out from the rest of my magazine.

aperture is like a pupil for high and low key lighting
I will be using high key lighting for the photos I'm creating, this will allow the audience to fully see and appreciate the model and clothing used in the shot. To do this I will use a smaller aperture to get maximum depth of field. I will be doing this in order to make the model and clothing the main focus of the page as I think a noticeable image will be the most important component in selling a magazine.

Font Choice
For my font choice I will use a variety of both conventional and sophisticated fonts in order to enagge the readers attention in different ways because if I only use one type of font they may not bother to read all of the text on the page  whereas, a number of fonts will grab the readers attention.

Doing this task I have learnt that I need to consider if each of these components fit with the theme of my magazine and my target audience of men in the ABC1 wage bracket. Therefore I can not just pick random fonts or colour schemes as the target audience needs to be considered.

Masthead Planning

Masthead Planning

purple-rain-font
This is a font a may consider using for my masthead, this is because it is a sophisticated and elegant font which will fit the tone of my magazine and my sophisticated ABC1 audience. However, I am concerned about using this as the font for my masthead as it is quite difficult to read and therefore may not catch a potential buyers attention as they will dismiss it. This font is called still time.

rolling-stone-font
This font is thicker than the last therefore it will stand out to potential readers and also possesses the sophisticated look I desire. Although, I think I want the Masthead to be more bold so it stands out a bit more than this font.

  enchanted-land-font
This font looks interesting and eye catching but I am reluctant to use it as it looks Gothic and that is not the vibe I want to give to potential readers of my magazine as it will not appeal to my target audience of ABC1's.

Doing this task I now have a better idea od what sort of font will suit the masthead for my magazine. This is important as the masthead is used to attract readers and lets the reader know what kind of magazine this is.

Research into the genre

GQ
main audience are 16-24 males- For younger males so they will have the latest fashions
71% of the People that buy GQ are employed. This shows that the magazine caters for people who are earning regular money.
62% male buyers- male dominated audience means the magazine will include clothing that appeals to men.
ABC1 demographic- they are part of the highest earners demographic therefore they will prefer high end clothing
79% of buyers are on high income or above average
GQ History- GQ (formerly Gentlemen's Quarterly) is an international monthly men's magazine based in New York City and founded in 1931. The magazine focuses on fashion, style, and culture for men, though articles on food, movies, fitness, sex, music, travel, sports, technology, and books are also featured in the magazine.

Men's vogue
Men's Vogue was a monthly men's magazine that covered fashion, design, art, culture, sports and technology. On October 30, 2008 Condé Nast announced that they intended to fold the magazine into Vogue proper as a bi-annual subscriber's supplement.

The content for this magazine included featured celebrities, athletes, powerbrokers, and lesser known men of style. Areas covered included art and architecture, travel and food, politics and finance, books and sports, custom tailoring and fine watches, and many other topics.

I have learned that this genre of magazine is suited towards younger men on an above average income. This means that the clothes i will use in my magazine will be smart and dapper.

Conventions of covers:
The main convention for a magazine cover are: a masthead, coverlines, large main image, variety of font sizes and a barcode. This cover utilises all these conventions giving the cover a professional and conventional look

For this task we had to re-create the Hight School Musical scene "What Time is it" We had to act, film and edit the final video.

Doing this task I have  learnt the importance of camera angles to create the exact effect and shot you want. I have also learnt that it is vital to get your actors to use the required facial expression in order to create the shot you want. This will be useful when i create my magazine as the model I use will need to use different facial expressions to create the desired effectfor the photo.

Magazine Synergy

The GQ website helps to promote the magzine by giving similar information to what the magazine does.. Both the magzine and website contain different articles of the different topics from the magazine such as, fashion, lifestyle and culture. Also, the webste helps to promote the magazine by offering oppourtunitiess to byuy different issues of the magazineon cut price deals.

A difference between the magazine and the website is the colour scheme as the magazineuses a lot more bright and eye catching colours, this is done in order attract customers so they will notice and then buy the magazine. Wheras, people who use the website are already fans of the magazine therefore less eyecatching colours are needed and they focus more on content to entertain the readers.

The magazine only promotes the website a bit by statng the website address in a small font on the front cover of the magazine, this helps to promote the website to people who do not neccessarily buy the magazine

In this task I analysed the strengths and weaknesses of another students work.

Doing this task allowed me to learn that making your final product appealing for your intended audience is very important. To do this you must consider their: lifestyle, income, favourite colours and other things.

Page By Page Analysis

In this task I conducted a page by page analysis of the first 60 pages of a magazine, recording the content, image to text ratio, colours used, headline, copy and anything else. I used a table to present this analysis.

Doning this task I learnt that Magazine pages are mostly dominated by images rather than text, therefore when i make my magazine i will ensure i have preffessional and appealing pictures as they will dominate the majority of my magaizne.
